Don Miguel Ruiz came to the Bodhi Tree Bookstore in May 1998 to discusses his book The Four Agreements. Don Miguel Ruiz was born into a family of healers and raised in rural Mexico by a curandera (healer) mother and a nagual (shaman) grandfather. He initially embraced a secular life choosing to become a doctor (surgeon) until a near death experience pulled him back to his heritage. He devoted himself to mastering his ancient ancestral wisdom, studying with his mother and a powerful shaman in the Mexican desert. His grandfather, who has passed on, continues to teach him in his dreams. In the tradition of the Toltec, a nagual guides an individual to personal freedom. Don Miguel Ruiz is a nagual from the Eagle Knight lineage, and is dedicated to sharing his knowledge of the esoteric teachings. Ruiz has an exceptional ability to explain the shamanistic way of life, and his teachings can lead to dramatic personal growth, love and a greater sense of well being.

"The four 'agreements': Be impeccable with your word. Don't take anything personally. Don't make assumptions. Always do your best." - Don Miguel Ruiz

Dr. Leonard Shlain is a physician and surgeon with a lifelong interest in the arts and humanities. His acclaimed book Art & Physics: Parallel Visions in Space, Time, & Light appeared in 1991, followed by The Alphabet Versus the Goddess in 1998. His book Sex, Time, and Power: How Women's Sexuality Shaped Human Evolution (August, 2003) is an in depth exploration of themes first introduced in his book The Alphabet Versus the Goddess. He appeared at the Bodhi Tree in October, 1998 to discuss his book The Alphabet Versus the Goddess, and what follows is a partial text of Dr. Shlain's presentation.

Leonard Shlain says, "I wanted to know what event in culture could have been so immense and so pervasive as to change the sex of God?" And he adds, "I think that the thug who mugged the goddess was actually literacy."

Doreen Virtue, author of Angel Medicine, and Steven Farmer, author of Power Animals came to the Bodhi Tree Bookstore in November 2004 to present and discuss their books. They have been married for several years and frequently travel and lecture together.

Doreen Virtue is a lifelong clairvoyant who works with the angelic, elemental and ascended-master realms. Doreen holds Ph.D., M.A., and B.A. university degrees in counseling psychology, and is a former director of inpatient and outpatient psychiatric facilities at various hospitals.

Steven D. Farmer, Ph.D. is a spiritual psychotherapist, shamanic practitioner and minister.

First up, Steven presents his book Power Animals, which instructs and guides you to connect with your power animal. Then Steven introduces Doreen Virtue, who discusses her book, Angel Medicine. Both a spiritual adventure story and a reference book, Angel Medicine is a three-part work that relates the story of Doreen's recovery of memories of Atlantian healing methods along with messages from Hermes -- the Egyptian and Greek prophet and deity -- and the angels.

Fred Alan Wolf came to the Bodhi Tree Bookstore in 2004 to discuss his book Matter Into Feeling: A New Alchemy of Science and Spirit. Fred Alan Wolf combines his talent for quantum physics with a sharp philosophical mind, a poet’s heart, and the mystic’s visionary quest. He is one of the foremost representatives of new-paradigm thinking in science. Using the discoveries of quantum-relativistic physics, he has been able to bring scientific rigor into the study of such elusive phenomena as mysticism, shamanism, dreams, the relationship between the mind and the body, and the nature of reality.

In his work, Wolf explores the basic operations of thinking, sensing, feeling, and intuiting form and shape the primary material of our conscious and unconscious life. He calls it the "new alchemy" and he writes that reshaping this primary material gives rise to forces that transform the world and us, namely creation, animation, resistance, vitality, replication, chance, unification, structure, and transformation. And in a summing up, he adds, "The ultimate goal of all this being the transmutation of information into matter; matter arises from the mind - a vast field of influence commonly envisioned as the Mind of God."

Hank Wesselman Dr. Hank Wesselman came to the Bodhi Tree Bookstore in February, 2004 to discuss his book Spirit Medicine: Healing in the Sacred Realms. Dr. Wesselman's co-author for this book is his wife, transpersonal medical practitioner Jill Kuykendall. In Spirit Medicine, they present us with a cross-cultural consideration of illness, healing, and health care from the ancient wisdom of the traditional peoples. Spirit Medicine provides you with the singular key to success that energy medicine by itself lacks. It will also provide you with a perspective derived from the Hawaiian kahuna tradition, of which knowledge of the soul cluster, as well as the multileveled nature of reality, forms a foundation. Included with the book is an experiential CD.

Dr. Hank Wesselman is a scientists, anthropologist, shaman and professor. His work reflects his warm-hearted humanity, erudition, and startling experiences. In person, he is an extraordinary and engaging story teller and conversationalist. For information about Hank Wesselman and Jill Kuykendall, you may access their web site: www.sharedwisdom.com.

  • José Argüelles José Argüelles has devoted his lifetime to a pursuit of the study of the nature of art, time and history. The course of his work reflects a highly intelligent, organized, original and independent spirit. His many books are a demonstration of the themes that have inspired him and evoke an original understanding of the evolving nature of consciousness. The root of all his endeavors lies in the examination of the holistic science that unifies body and mind, sense and nature. He writes, "From the beginning of my pursuits I have been moved by my intuitive awareness of our intrinsic wholeness as humans, and the knowledge that this wholeness is a reflection of the wholeness of Earth, the solar system, and the cosmos itself." His work expresses a profoundly radical break with Western scientific and academic modes of thought. By putting together the mathematical codes of the Mayan calendar and being initiated into the Mayan prophetic tradition, Argüelles has taken on the prophecy mantle, and his life task has become to define the "time science" of which the prophecies are a manifestation.

Unequal taxes, unequal accountability for crime, unequal influence, unequal privacy, and unequal access to natural resources and our commons - these inequalities and more are the effects of corporations winning the rights of persons while simultaneously being given the legal protections to avoid the responsibilities that come with these rights. Hartmann tells the intriguing story of how it got this way - from the colonists' rebellion against the commercial interests of the British elite, to the distorted application of the Fourteenth amendment - and how to get back to a government of, by, and for the people. He offers specific legal remedies that could truly save the world from political, economic, and ecological disaster through actions that can be taken by citizens, courts, legislatures, and local communities.

Thom Hartmann is an award-winning author of more than a dozen books, and international relief worker and psychotherapist, a former business and marketing consultant, and the founder and former CEO of seven corporations that have generated over a quarter-billion dollars in revenue. The father of three grown children, he and his wife live in central Vermont.

Thom Hartmann came to the Bodhi Tree Bookstore in 2003 to discuss his book Unequal Protection: The Rise of Corporate Dominance and the Theft of Human Rights.

David Deida came to the Bodhi Tree Bookstore in January 2003 to discuss his book Finding God Through Sex: A Spiritual Guide to Ecstatic Loving and Deep Passion for Men and Women. Teacher and author David Deida is revolutionizing the way men and women learn to grow together spiritually and sexually. In a wide-ranging and lively dialogue, Deida discussed the three stages of sex and spirituality, how men and women can explore and understand both their masculine and feminine energies, how some Buddhist practices transform sexual desires into higher states of love and compassion, and how to liberate oneself from past patterns and become open to new possibilities and experiences.

"You can open to God through sex. By learning to open your heart and body while embracing and trusting all energies from rough ravishment to sublime gentleness, you can open to be lived by the mystery that lives the entire universe. You can open to be lived by love with no limits, so you are alive as love, offering the deepest gifts of your heart spontaneously and without hesitation, in every moment, at work, with your family and friends, as well as in bed with your lover." -- David Deida, in Finding God Through Sex

Maitreya Project Budhas Face A rare collection of Buddhist relics was making its way across the United States. The Bodhi Tree Bookstore was honored to be the host to the relics on Saturday, November 30, Wednesday, December 4, Thursday, December 5, and again on Thursday, December 19, and Friday, December 20, 2002. There was a steady stream of visitors who were visually and spiritually captivated by the large golden Maitreya Buddha statue with a backdrop of stunning thankas. For many, the relics invoke the exceptional spiritual power of their former beings. A mere perambulation of the relics is said to be of great merit and help promote well-being in one self and in all beings everywhere. At the Bodhi Tree, the exhibit was hosted by Victoria Ewart, who is the Relic Tour Manager, and Martin Wassell, producer of the video, "Heart of Tibet: An Intimate Portrait of the 14th Dalai Lama."

John Daishin Buksbazen came to the Bodhi Tree in 2002 to discuss his book Zen Meditation in Plain English . John Daishin Buksbazen is a Zen Buddhist priest at the Zen Center of Los Angeles (ZCLA). Ordained in 1968, he trained for more than a decade with Taizan Maezumi Roshi while serving as publishing editor of the ZCLA Zen writing series, and also as a pastoral counselor. He is now a psychotherapist and psychoanalyst in private practice in Santa Monica, California and a faculty member at the Southern California Psychoanalytic Institute, where he did his psychoanalytic training.

"It's not about believing in a code; it's not about belonging to a club; it's about coming to terms with what our life is, investigating it thoroughly, and appreciating it." - John Daishin Buksbazen

Global visionaries James Redfield and Michael Murphy came to the Bodhi Tree Bookstore in January 2002 to talk about their book, God and the Evolving Universe. When James Redfield self-published the Celestine Prophecy in 1993, it enjoyed a ground swell of enthusiasm that made it one of the best-selling spiritual novels of all time. Its theme of synchronicity inspired many to a new, experiential spirituality, and it fostered a special relationship between its countless readers. Michael Murphy began his quest into the nature of human potential as a psychology major at Stanford University. In 1961, he co-founded the Esalen Institute in Big Sur, California, which has become the leading personal growth center in the world. He is the author of Golf in the Kingdom and its sequel, The Kingdom of Shivas Irons, The Future of the Body, and The Life We Are Given (with George Leonard). James Redfield and Michael Mlurphy found shared interest in spirituality and human development and the seminal book God and the Evolving Universe became its expression. Sylvia Timbers is a documentary filmmaker with a background in consciousness studies and psychological and spiritual development. What follows is and edited version of their Bodhi Tree Bookstore presentation.

Brandon Bays came to the Bodhi Tree in 2002 to discuss her book The Journey. Brandon Bays had been working in the natural healing and alternative health field for 15 years when she was diagnosed with a basketball-sized tumor in 1992. Alarmed by the size of the tumor and the related internal bleeding, her doctor called for immediate surgery. Brandon, however, begged for a short 'window of time' to try her own mind-body healing methods. Within weeks she walked away from her doctor with a clean bill of health. Miraculously, without drugs or surgery, her tumor was gone.

Sharon SalbergSharon Salzberg has been practicing and studying Buddhism for more than thirty years, and during this time, has trained with some of the foremost masters of India, Burma, Nepal, Bhutan, and Tibet. She is an acclaimed spiritual leader and meditation instructor as well as cofounder of the Insight Meditation Society, a center devoted to meditation training, and the Barre Center for Buddhist Studies in Massachusetts. She is the author of the noted book, Lovingkindness: the Revolutionary Art of Happiness. She came to the Bodhi Tree in 2002 to discuss her book Faith: Trusting Your Own Deepest Experience.

"Faith is being in touch with the strengths or powers in this universe that are not defined or crushed by our circumstances. Then we can go forward, even if we're very afraid."
    - Sharon Salzberg

Jacob Needleman is not an abstract philosopher. He always tackles those issues that have a direct impact on our lives - such as time, love, or money. He searches for insights from the world's great wisdom teachings since modern religions, in his view, offer more doctrine than meaningful inner experience.

Now, in The American Soul, Jacob Needleman offers an innovative look at where America has been, where it stands today, and where we might go from here.

His book weaves together politics, history, religion, philosophy and mythology and, most importantly, takes a fresh look at the lives and ideals of our nation's founders and heroes.. And he examines the issues of morality and truth, conscience, compassion, war and peace, and the role of government.

He visited the Bodhi Tree Bookstore in February, 2002. The following is edited from that presentation.

Lynn V. Andrews writings reflect the juxtaposition of our urban lives with the magical existence expressed by the wisdom of her native American teachers. After some eighteen books and countless seminars, Andrews is currently recognized as a leading voice in personal development. Following the practice of her teachers, she tells stories and relates experiences -- that at first may seem unrelated. But when the fragments and pieces are brought together, they form a coherent whole. Andrews writes, "There is magic in this world if you want the world to be magical. If you want life to be special, it will be. No one wants to be bored or consumed by ordinary drudgery. But what happens, all too often, is that when magic is presented to us, we don't believe it, because we don't trust ourselves. We don't realize what can really be accomplished. We don't realize that if we wish to, we can take other forms. We can sit in the presence of the great masters, angels, or ancient seers of wisdom and find peace and wisdom, but it takes many small deaths, the giving away of old limitations, to get there." The following is edited from her Bodhi Tree presentation in November, 2001.

Alberto Villoldo, Ph.D. came to the Bodhi Tree Bookstore in May, 2001, to talk about his book Shaman, Healer, Sage:Heal Yourself and Others with the Energy Medicine of the Americas. Villoldo is a classically trained anthropologist who has studied with shamans and healers in the Amazon and the Andes mountains for over twenty years. An accomplished teacher of energy medicine, he is also the founder of The Four Winds Society (www.thefourwinds.com) which offers programs on shamanic healing and shamanic expeditions. Shaman, Healer, Sage offers an account of the healing practices of Native Americans and, in particular, how this ancient knowledge has survived among the descendants of the Inkas.  The following is an edited version of that presentation.

Roger Weir Roger Weir has taught at University level since 1965 and publicly offered his visionary work in Los Angeles since 1980. The publication of his book Our New Aion is the first blossoming in book form of a vast reservoir of compelling work. Our New Aion was first presented in 1994 as a series of four lectures in commemoration of the death of his daughter Sarah. The work covers four themes and spans traditional wisdom school patterns and their emergence into a future civilization. It draws upon material from the forthcoming books, "Jesus In Alexandria", "Shared Presence Bodhisattvas" and "Hermetic America". The fourth part of the book is about our future civilization, which will span our entire star system. The lectures for Our New Aion were transcribed and updated in 2001 for this publication. Roger Weir came to the Bodhi Tree Bookstore to talk about his book in July 2001. What follows is an edited version of that presentation.

In progressive two-year cycles, and for the past several years, Roger Weir has been teaching every Saturday at the Bodhi Tree Bookstore Annex. Weir’s presentations draw upon a deep sensitivity, insight, and understanding of the entire range of "all that is" and "is-not", from East to West, and from the dawn of the cosmos to the distant future. The presentations are not simple to grasp because they encompass a complex formulation, a high level of vocabulary, and concepts juxtaposed in unusual ways and defined pristinely. However, his lectures are mysteriously compelling and fill you with the sense that you have experienced something unique and valuable. Weir challenges us to listen, read and comprehend in new and transformative ways, to "see" with new eyes and to learn "how to learn" spontaneously. Weir’s teachings may be the key to our survival and successful function in the 21st century and beyond.

All of Weir’s lectures have been recorded, initially on audio cassettes, but starting in 2000, on video cassette as well. Beginning in 2004, lectures are also available in a CD and DVD format. These cassettes may be purchased individually or in complete sets. In addition, sets of audio cassettes are available for other lecture series such as "Hermetic America". Audio cassettes are $10.00 each and video cassettes are $20.00. Please contact the Shared Presence Foundation directly to acquire cassettes or additional information. Shared Presence Foundation: 310-279-9668.

Lucia Capacchione is an art therapist, artist and author of several books, including Recovery Of Your Inner Child and The Power of Your Other Hand. She began her career with the designer Charles Eames, and was also mentored by Buckminister Fuller. After she was diagnosed with a life-threatening illness, Capacchione came to explore writing and drawing as methods for personal growth and healing. Her complete recovery - which she achieved without medication -- led her to change careers and become an art therapist. Many of her books are used as texts in expressive arts therapy, psychology, creative writing and art courses. The following is an edited version of her Bodhi Tree presentation. Edited by Camilla Denton

"The first flicker of an idea, an artist will put it down. Make a model, do a blueprint. Make a mock-up. Do something physical."
    - Lucia Capacchione

Andrew Cohen Since Andrew Cohen's awakening in 1986, he has spoken for one thing: the potential for total liberation from the bondage of ignorance. Through his books, public teachings, and meetings with spiritual leaders of almost every tradition, he has tirelessly sought to convey that spiritual liberation's true significance is its potential to completely transform not only the individual, but the entire way that human beings live together. He is the founder and guiding inspiration behind What Is Enlightenment magazine, a groundbreaking forum for penetrating spiritual inquiry about the most important spiritual issues of our time.

The following is an edited version of Andrew Cohen's Bodhi Tree Bookstore presentation. Edited by James Culnan.

Shakti Gawain came to the Bodhi Tree in 2001 to discuss her book Developing Intuition. Shakti Gawain, as a youngster, was logical and skeptical, refusing to accept anything unless it had been proven by science. But coming of age in the 60's, exposed her to a more holistic approach to life, as she became interested in Eastern philosophies and began the practice of yoga and meditation. In time, her exploration of visualization, opened her mind to new vistas and her intuitive healing abilities. The practice of listening to and following her inner guidance became a priority, and eventually, an essential part of her inspired teaching.

"There is a universal, intelligent life force that resides within each one of us as a deep wisdom, and an inner knowing. We can access this wonderful source of knowledge and wisdom through our intuition, an inner sense that tells us what feels right and true for us at any given moment." --Shakti Gawain

During his visit to the Bodhi Tree, quantum physicist turned consciousness scientist, Amit Goswami, spoke with urgency and passion about the discoveries of quantum physics. For centuries, religion and science have offered conflicting views of how our universe and life came into being. Did God create everything, or is it all merely the result of the physical or material principals described and measured by science? As Goswami told us, a whole new picture emerges when we gaze in wonderment through the "visionary window" of quantum physics. We find that the discoveries of science closely resemble what the mystics have been saying for centuries, namely that consciousness -- rather than matter - gives rise to our universe. As a result, instead of reducing our world to mechanistic formulas, science itself points the way to new dimensions of meaning and fulfillment.

Awakening The Buddha Within by Lama Surya Das

Lama Surya Das (a.k.a. Jeffrey Miller) grew up in Long Island, New York. He was a "regular guy" who lettered in three sports in high school and aspired to a career as a ballplayer. The day after he graduated from college, he set off on a spiritual pilgrimage with $500 in his pocket. As he "followed his heart," his wanderings eventually brought him to Nepal and India, where he met people who embodied the qualities he had been seeking: love, wisdom, and serenity. They were Tibetan Buddhist meditation masters, or Lamas. Then, with the encouragement and guidance of some of these great teachers, Surya Das began his own study and practice of Tibetan Buddhism, and eventually completed two traditional three-year retreats.

Today, Lama Surya Das is one of the most highly trained American lamas in the Tibetan tradition. An author, poet, translator, and full-time spiritual teacher, he lectures and leads meditation retreats all over the world. He is the founder of the Dzogchen Foundation, and author of the seminal books Awakening to the Sacred: Creating A Spiritual Life From Scratch and Awakening the Buddha Within: Eight Steps to Enlightenment.

With a warm sense of humor, Lama Surya Das brings to his dharma teachings a lightness that many of us lack in our spiritual search. Through examples from his own life, and from the lives of his friends and students, he cites familiar struggles we face everyday as we search for fulfillment. He explains how the sufferings of one are the sufferings of all, and how practicing generosity towards others brings greater joy and meaning into our lives. Most importantly, he also describes how to become our very own authentic, unselfconscious self, and shows how truly rich and satisfying reality can be.

Dan Millman came to the Bodhi Tree in 2001 to discuss his book Living On Purpose. Dan Millman is a renowned spiritual teacher and writer drawing on his experience as a world champion athlete, university coach, college professor, martial arts teacher, and family man (he is now a grandfather!). In his influential and seminal book, The Way of the Peaceful Warrior, he introduced his mentor, the old warrior Socrates, who taught him about the strategies for living the Tao of life, namely the "House Rules".

Dan Millman has a gift of expression and intuitive understanding that flows from a sophisticated inner being. As Millman writes, "My responses seem to come not so much from me, but through me. I do not, however, channel any discarnate warrior-sages from the fifth dimension, chat with God, or transcribe the dictations of astral guides. I claim only a gift of expression, and intuitive understanding of the House Rules, and an open heart."

Millman says that we must live on purpose (rather than at random), and embrace both reason and faith. "Reason provides clear goals," he says, "While faith teaches us to trust the process of our lives."

"I think enlightenment is as enlightenment does. It's not some subjective internal state of feeling good all the time and feeling free. It's how you behave and that's our human maturity."

Dr. Judith Orloff came to the Bodhi Tree Bookstore in 2000 to discuss her book Dr. Judith Orloff's Guide to Intuitive Healing: 5 Steps to Physical, Emotional, and Sexual Wellness. As a mystic, medical intuitive and psychiatrist, Dr. Judith Orloff explores how our mind and its relationship to the fundamental mystery of life is the key to vitality and health or to sickness and death. In her belief that we are the keepers of an intuitive intelligence so powerful it can tell us how to heal, Orloff advocates integrating modern science and intuition to diagnose and treat illness, and promote wellness.

Judith Orloff teaches and writes engagingly, with warmth intelligence and deep compassion. "There is magic in what is invisible," she says. "Allow yourself to be touched. Be innocent again so nothing is kept from you. You can feel the intuitive code everywhere: in the warmth of your breath, your body, in the soft rustling of leaves in the wind, in the sea at midnight. Be very quiet. Listen carefully . . . the moon, the earth, the stars all know its secret. Now let them whisper it to you."

Franz Metcalf is a Buddhist scholar with a doctorate in religion from the University of Chicago. He is the co-author of Buddhist Spirituality and a professor at California State University, Los Angeles. He came to the Bodhi Tree Bookstore to tell us about how the Buddha's words address those nagging questions about our jobs, relationships, daily dilemmas and our ultimate questions about life and death. The following is an edited version of his presentation.

"If Buddha can be found in a simple leaf, well, Buddha must be everywhere. Buddhist scriptures tell us over and over that all things are Buddha's body. The trick is seeing them that way." --  Franz Metcalf

Thom Hartmann is an award-winning author, international lecturer, teacher and psychotherapist, who is noted for his innovative thinking. In his new book, he offers a thoroughly researched analysis of how far our global civilization has gone off-course, and shows how we can -- and must -- change our lifestyle by reconnecting with ancient wisdom. His message is a passionate and challenging call to consciousness, advocating a spirituality and ecology that offers hope for the future. The following is an edited version of his Bodhi Tree presentation. Edited by James Culnan

"We may tell ourselves that this is the history of the human race and there's nothing to be done about it, but it's actually the history of only one culture. There are thousands of cultures around the planet that have had stable populations, and who have not spoiled their environment, thereby putting their own lives, and all life on earth, at risk." - Thom Hartman

Roger Weir came to the Bodhi tree Bookstore in May 2000 to present his lecture Ritual 6, entitled Euripides and Genji. This is one out of a series of 104 lectures of the Differential Consciousness Educational Course. It was chosen as an example of the depth and style of his presentation and serves as an introduction to his work.

Roger Weir, a former university lecturer, began his visionary work on the history of ideas, or as he calls it, "the yoga of civilization", in 1955. Out of this grew his two year educational course, Differential Consciousness. It is offered as a 21st century education. Based on transformed ancient Eastern and Western wisdom traditions, the course embraces nature, ritual, mythology, symbolism, vision, art, history, and science. Consciousness, in all its aspects, is deeply explored. His educational course reflects his conviction that our civilization, following Greek and Roman models, has reached a point of crisis and no future exists without the emergence of something new. That something new is Weir’s Differential Consciousness Educational Course. Weir explores themes that span traditional wisdom school philosophies and their potential contribution to a future civilization. He emphatically states that we desperately need to develop a capacity for freedom to come into wholeness.
Journalist Diane Goldner came to the Bodhi Tree Bookstore in 1999 to discuss her book Infinite Grace: Where the Worlds of Science and Spiritual Meet. The book was re-printed in paperback in 2003 and its name changed to How People Heal: Exploring the Scientific Basis of Subtle Energy in Healing
In How People Heal, investigative journalist, Diane Goldner, takes us on a journey to show how spiritual healing works and to see what science, if any, lay behind it. The book profiles leading healers and examines the experiences of both clients and healers. It also explores the work of renowned scientists, who have found that spiritual healing and focused intention can achieve remarkable results.

“The thoughts we have are affecting not only our own bodies, but, also everyone around us.” –Diane Goldner

Sonia Choquette came to the Bodhi Tree in 1999 to discuss her book The Wise Child: A Spritual Guide to Nurturing Your Child's Intuition. She is a world-renowned author, storyteller, vibrational healer, and six-sensory spiritual teacher in international demand for her guidance, wisdom, and capacity to heal the soul. She specializes in helping others recognize that we are all endowed with a sixth sense that we can count on.
A highly trained intuitive, with extensive background in the mysticism of East and West, Sonia was educated at the University of Denver and at the Sorbonne in Paris, and holds a Ph.D. in metaphysics. Sonia says, "I am intuitive because I was encouraged at all times to be awake, aware, and guided by my sixth sense. I grew up in an environment that treated intuition not only as natural, but actually essential to successful navigation in life. Intuition is a gift that we all have, that we can all experience, that we can all trust and that we all need!"

Eckhart Tolle came to the Bodhi Tree in November, 1999 to talk about his book, The Power of Now, and to tell us about the radical state of being that is available to all. Tolle was a research scholar and supervisor at Cambridge University before his life was radically changed by a spiritual awakening. After further contemplation and study, he became an exceptional counselor and spiritual teacher. Tolle speaks about the nature of human unconsciousness and dysfunction as well as its most common manifestations, from conflict in relationships to warfare between tribes or nations, and he speaks with the intention of drawing his listeners into a new awareness.

Georg Feuerstein on the Yoga Tradition, an interview by Richard Miller, Ph.D. Republished by PermissionFor more than thirty years, Georg Feuerstein, Ph.D., has contributed steadily and significantly to the dialogue between East and West, in particular to our understanding of Yoga. His more than thirty books include many scholarly and popular works on Yoga, notably Tantra: The Path of Ecstasy (1998), Teachings of Yoga (1997), The Shambhala Encyclopedia of Yoga (1996), and The Philosophy of Classical Yoga (1980, 1996) and The Yoga Tradition (1998), which is a 510-page illustrated overview of all important aspects of Yoga in its Hindu, Buddhist, and Jaina forms. "My purpose in writing this book," observes Georg Feuerstein, "was to give Yoga practitioners and teachers the best possible tool for studying Yoga systematically and in adequate depth. I hope that it will enable them to more fully appreciate the magnificence of the tradition of which they are a part and also to practice Yoga more authentically."
In 1996, Feuerstein founded the Yoga Research Center in Northern California. The Center has several goals, including conducting and facilitating indological, historical, medical, and psychological research on Yoga. The Center is unique in that it is non-denominational, seeking to bridge the gap between Hindu, Buddhist, and Jaina Yoga and between traditional Yoga and contemporary adaptations, as well as between scholars, scientists, and Yoga practitioners.

Phyllis Curott appeared at the Bodhi Tree in October, 1998 to talk about her book Book of Shadows and offered us a fascinating window on the world of a witches' circle. What follows is an edited version of that presentation by Camilla Denton.

"A witch is somebody who has learned to take the blindfold off and to see the world as sacred. When you realize this, you see that the magic is also in you. Magic is the relationship we have with divine energy." - Phyllis Curott

Phyllis Curott is a graduate of Brown University and NYU School of Law, and is a practicing attorney, dividing her time between New York City and her travels. In addition, she is a film producer and author. Also, for over twenty years, Curott has been a Wiccan High Priestess and the founder of the Temple of Ara. As a High Priestess she is president emerita of the oldest and largest international religious organization in the Wiccan tradition. Starhawk came to the Bodhi Tree Bookstore in December, 1999 to present the 20th anniversary edition of her book The Spiral Dance. Starhawk first published The Spiral Dance, her seminal work on the goddess religion in 1979, when she was in her twenties. Today, even as it draws on the truly ancient, this book remains essential, contemporary and politically relevant. There has been tremendous growth in the goddess movement in the past twenty years. In her 1989, tenth anniversary edition introduction, Starhawk wrote about her shift away from a polarized view of the world as a dance of "female" and "male" qualities and energies, and toward an inclusive view of gender and energy. To facilitate this, and other shifts in perspective, the twentieth anniversary edition supplements the original text with a running commentary, as well as new versions of old myths and, occasionally, new interpretations of the material. The book is still an unparalleled reference on the practice and philosophies of witchcraft, and a guide to the ways in which we can turn to the goddess to develop our power, and integrate all aspects of our existence. This is brilliant, comprehensive overview of the growth, suppression, and modern-day reemergence of Wicca as a Goddess-worshipping religion that has left an indelible mark on feminist spiritual consciousness.

Stephen Levine is a poet and teacher of guided meditation and healing techniques that have found widespread application. For several years, Levine has worked creatively to help thousands of people approach their own deaths with equanimity, truth, and an open heart. Among Joan Borysenko's countless credits, she is co-founder and former director of the Mind-Body Clinic at Harvard Medical School, and the pioneering author of Minding the Body; Mending the Mind.

“Once a month, our worldview expands to include the things blocking the flow of energy in the web of life. It's an incredible time, but mostly our culture says, ‘Oh phooey, PMS, let's give everybody medicine. Put them all on birth control pills to get rid of this.’”—Joan Borysenko
Frijof Capra came to the Bodhi Tree Bookstore in 1997 to discuss his book The Web of Life. During the past several years, scientists have challenged conventional views of evolution and the organization of living systems, developing new theories with revolutionary philosophical and social implications. Fritjof Capra has been at the forefront of this revolution. Here, Capra takes yet another giant step, setting forth a new scientific language to describe the interrelationships and interdependencies of psychological, biological, physical, social and cultural phenomena -- the "web of life."

“Mind is not a thing; it is a process, the process of cognition which is the process of life. And the brain is one particular structure through which this process takes place.”—Frijof Capra
Caroline Myss came to the Bodhi tree Bookstore in 1996 to discuss her book Anatomy of the Spirit. Caroline Myss is an international lecturer and workshop leader in the field of energy, medicine and human consciousness. She calls her work "medical intuition", proclaiming that it is a skill, not a gift., and people can learn it. In association with Norman Shealy, M.D. (Founder of the American Holistic Medical Association), Myss has developed a program to teach awareness of the physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of illness and healing. Her message is timely and transforming. Her lectures are spirited, intimate, full of humor and compassionate. She spoke at the Bodhi Tree last October.

"Our spiritual task in this lifetime is to learn to balance the energies of body and soul, of thought and action, of physical and mental powers"—Caroling Myss
Susan Jeffers came to the Bodhi Tree Bookstore in May 1996 to discuss her book End The Struggle & Dance With Life. Judith Orloff came to the Bodhi Tree Bookstore in July, 1996 to talk about her book Second sight. Respected, board certified psychiatrist Judith Orloff always knew she had psychic abilities. From her earliest memories, her dreams were filled with premonitions, while her waking moments were fraught with uncanny intuition and visceral empathy. Yet, when she opened her psychiatric practice, she put her gifts aside. It took the ignored premonition of a patient's suicide attempt to jolt Dr. Orloff into embracing the psychic as an invaluable asset in her clinical practice. Now, this pioneering physician defies medical taboos and delves into the mysterious realm of the psychic with the mind of a scientist. In Second Sight, she bravely shares her own journey of discovery and shows the way to develop the psychic talents she believes we all have.
“Ultimately, we might discover the light in our everyday life, without having to go through a crisis to get there. But it's also important to clear our psychological issues so we can become more transparent vessels, psychically and spiritually.”—Judith Orloff

David Viscott came to the Bodhi Tree Bookstore in early 1996 to talk about his book Emotional Resilence. A few months later, on October 10, 1996, Dr. Viscott died at the age of 58 of heart failure. He left a legacy of healing and sanity.

Dr. Viscott spoke to a large and enthusiastic audience at the Bodhi Tree event. We hope this edited version of his talk conveys Dr. Viscott's wisdom, and his eagerness to offer his listeners the insights to help them resolve their emotional obstacles and discover how much they had to give.

“No teaching, no plan, and no sense of direction is going to be right for you. In the end you have to discard everything and be wholly yourself. It doesn't mean that you are a rebel, but it means that you stop holding on to things merely because they comfort you. The only comfort you know is that you've done what you are here to do.”—David Viscott

In July of 1995, Deepak Chopra was welcomed by a capacity crowd in the Bodhi Tree Bookstore Event room to hear him introduce his first novel The Return of Merlin. Not content to rest on his laurels of such seminal books as Ageless Body, Timeless Mind and The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success, Chopra has turned to fiction. Fiction, he says, compels the writer to be clear about truth, because this is the medium in which we must really reveal ourselves.

“Life is full of mystery and magic and the miraculous and the wondrous. And when we have flashes of wonder, that’s when we experience the world of the wizard.” –Deepak Chopra

What follows is an edited version of Deepak Chopra’s Bodhi Tree Bookstore presentation.

Evelyne Blau came to the Bodhi Tree Bookstore in 1995 to present her book Krishnamurti 100 Years, a celebration of the life and work of J. Krishnamurti. She has worked extensively with the Krishnamurti material and knew Krishnamurti personally. She is on the board of directors of the Krishnamurti Foundation of America, edited Krishnamurti's book, Meditations, and produced a six part television series, Beyond Myth and Tradition, on some of the great themes Krishnamurti addressed. She has produced and co-written two feature length documentary films on Krishnamurti, The Challenge of Change and With A Silent Mind, which have been shown throughout the world.

The book Krishnamurti 100 years is now our-of-print (as of 2000) but it is such a valuable introduction to the entire Krishnamurti oeuvre, that we have retained this presentation. It is relevant because it serves as a good , brief introduction to the life work and importance of J. Krishnamurti.

Daphne Rose Kingma is a working psychotherapist who has helped thousands of individuals and couples understand and improve their relationships. She is the author of numerous acclaimed books. She writes, "In each of us there is a tremendous ongoing for love. The love we desire is not only the euphoric butterflies-in-the-stomach feeling of new romance, but also the ineffable consolation of being deeply known, received, and cared for, the profound sense of peace and security of spirit that comes from being deeply connected with another human being."

In the spring of 1995, she came to the Bodhi Tree Bookstore to talk about her insights into love and relationship. With grace and humor, she describes the metamorphosis she went through in the process of writing her several books on love and relationship. They each discuss different sides of a subject that intrigues us all, and lead us deeper and deeper into what she calls a "frontier" and into the opportunity "to see the person you love as a being of divinity" even when the dirty socks start to pile up.

Carlos Warter came to the Bodhi Tree Bookstore in February 1995 to discuss his book Recovery of the Sacred. We were especially interested in his view on identity. For example, he suggests we can completely heal ourselves of addictions, to the point where we no longer need to identify ourselves with our disease.

“You are an eternal being here to experience absolute love and to affect your environment through the giving of your powerful resources, instead of, Hey, you are French and you better behave? It's a shift. And the doorway--which is love--is the beginning of the journey.”—Carlos Warter

“We are more than a holy trinity, we are a quintessence.”—Carlos Warter

Swain Wolfe came to the Bodhi Tree Bookstore in the fall of 1994 from his home in Missoula, Montana to do a reading from his book, The Woman Who Lives in the Earth. The book is a fable about overcoming fear and hatred. As part of that fine evening, he offered to read a children’s short story to us that he was just finishing and preparing for publication in a special, illustrated hardbound edition. It is called Stolen Shadows. It is a wonderful story and Swain has allowed us to reprint it for our readers. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did at the reading.

Dr. Samuel A. Berne came to the Bodhi Tree Bookstore in February 1995 to discuss his book Creating Your Personal Vision. Dr. Berne, Optometrist, facilitator and author, is a leader in the field of Behavioral Optometry and Vision Therapy. Most of us think we need glasses or contact lenses to correct vision defects but Dr. Berne points out a connection between eyesight and the gestalt of the mind-body and how glasses may be a hindrance rather than an improvement. This is important information that we all can use to keep our vision, and our lives, more effective.

“As we begin to open up our spiritual energy, many times our physical vision will clear.”—Samuel A. Berne

Maya Tiwari came to the Bodhi Tree Bookstore in 1995 to talk about her book and her experiences with Ayurveda. She came to Ayurveda in an interesting way. Early on, Maya Tiwari enjoyed a successful career as a fashion designer with a plush Manhattan store, selling to the likes of Jackie Onassis. But when she was diagnosed with cancer, she found herself forced to reevaluate her life. She traveled to India, her homeland, where she became a devoted student of Ayurvedic medicine. Her enthusiasm was compelling, and understandably so. Not only is this lively woman completely free of cancer, but she seems to be glowing with health.

Ayurveda is profound practice inherited from the sages of India to reinvigorate and enrich our lives. By practicing sadhanas, the spiritual awareness of the earth, home, garden and community, we can reconnect with our primal memory of balance in nature and reclaim our capacity for effective self healing.

“Spiritual awareness is given to us so that we can refine our cognition, remember our karma and live in fullness.” –Maya Tiwari

Belleruth Naparstek came to the Bodhi Tree Bookstore in 1994 to discuss her book Staying Well with Guided Imergy. She is a clinical social worker and psychotherapist. Naparstek is recognized nationally as a dynamic, stimulating pioneer in her field.
Robert AitkenRobert Aitken came to the Bodhi Tree Bookstore in October 1994 to talk about his practice and his many books. During the presentation, Aitken Roshi read passages from his books Practice of Perfection, Encouraging Words and Ground We Share written with David Steindl-Rast, and answered audience questions or comments.

The term “Roshi” literally means “old teacher.” It is used in the United States to refer to a person who has been authorized as a fully independent Zen teacher. Aitken Roshi has been practicing Zen for more than forty years and has been actively teaching for two decades.

Aitken Roshi’s published writings (listed at the end of the presentation) provide comprehensive information for those wishing to learn about Zen, and especially for those who would like to experience Zen meditation. His many years of practice and study are evident in his frequent use of koans (recorded sayings and actions of the great Zen masters) through which he challenges his readers to arrive at their own realization of the meaning of Zen. At the same time, he is careful to provide background information that makes these unique expressions of Zen insight accessible to the Western reader.

Sam Keen came to Los Angeles in May 1994 to discuss his book Hymns To An Unknown God at the NAPRA (New Age Publishers Retail Alliance) authors breakfast during the American Booksellers Convention. He was introduced by Angeles Arrien, anthropologist and award winning author.

Kevin Ryerson came to the Bodhi Tree Bookstore in May 1994 to talk about his book Spirit Communication and trance-channeling. Some years ago, in the early 1980s, there was a surge of interest in trance-channeling that continues to this day. We went through the Bodhi Tree Bookstore and discovered that more than 30% of the titles were channeled, from the Oahspe Bible to the Urantia Book. Kevin Ryerson is one of the people who made trance-channeling a common word, common knowledge. Kevin Ryerson is more than a medium, clearer than a clairvoyant. He’s a professional intuitive whose mission is to bridge the gap between science and spirituality. He has taught and lectured extensively for the past several years.
James Redfield is an author, lecturer, screenwriter and film producer. The Celestine Prophecy (Satori Publishing) started out as a self-published book in 1992. James Redfield traveled about the country giving away many copies as well as selling them from the trunk of his automobile. A word of mouth campaign whirled about the book bringing it to national attention and publication by an international company, Warner Books in 1994. The book became a national and international bestseller. In 1996, the sequel, The Tenth Insight: Holding the Vision, also became a bestseller. As a testimony to the potency of the Celestine vision, the two books spent a combined 74 weeks on the New York Times Best Seller List, making James Redfield the best-selling hard cover author on the planet in 1996. The Celestine series of adventure parables continued in 1999 with the publication of The Secret of Shambhala: In Search of the Eleventh Insight.
The following excerpt is from the talk that James Redfield gave at the Bodhi Tree Bookstore as part of a national campaign to promote the 1994 Warner Books edition of The Celestine Prophecy.
Holistic physician Dr. Christine Northrup spoke to a rapt crowd at The Bodhi Tree Bookstore in June 1994 about her book Women’s Bodies, Women’s Wisdom. In several years of practice, this board advisor to Natural Health Magazine and former president (with Bernie Siegel) of the American Holistic Association has become the champion of restoring feminine and spiritual principles to women’s health care. With the wit and wisdom of a Deepak Chopra, she advocates a program which combines enlightened curing with caring.

Ron Teeguarden is known as an expert on Chinese tonic herbs and Chinese medicine. In 1992, Dana LaFontaine and Stan Madson visited Ron Teeguarden to explore what Chinese herbs are and why they are important.

Ron Teeguarden has devoted much of his life to the study and teaching of the Oriental healing arts. After being cured of a serious illness that Western medicine failed to help, he turned to studying macrobiotics with Herman Aihara and Michio Kushi. Later, in 1972, he continued on the path of oriental healing and began teaching acupressure and oriental health care. In 1975 he was accepted as the primary disciple of Taoist master Sung Jin Park, who taught him both the principles of Taoism and the system of Chinese herbal tonics.

Having discovered that his destiny is to teach the secrets of Chinese herbalism to us in the West, Teeguarden opened his first shop, The Tea Garden Herbal Emporium, several years ago in Venice. Featuring the highest quality herbs and herbal formulations, along with an elixir bar serving time-honored herbal drinks, he soon attracted numerous people interested in benefitting from the Chinese herbal system, or as it is also known, the "superior herbalism." Subsequently, a second Tea Garden opened on Beverly Boulevard in West Hollywood, followed by a third shop on Montana Avenue in Santa Monica.

Several years ago, Teeguarden left the The Tea Garden Herbal Emporium and started anew on his own. In October 2001, Ron and his wife Yanlin opened the Dragon Herbs Emporium (315 Wilshire Blvd., Santa Monica, CA 90049, Phone: 310-471-0404 or 888-55-TONIC). They have a comprehensive and informative web site at (www.DragonHerbs.com).

The Bodhi Tree spent several hours with Ron Teeguargarden. He spoke to us about Chinese herbs, the three treasures of Ching, Chi, and Shen, and the beautiful simplicity of Taoism. The following was adapted from that interview.

Mark Kenaston traveled to San Francisco in 1993 to interview Terrance McKenna for an article to be published in the Spring 1993 issue of the Bodhi Tree Bookstore Book Review magazine. At that time, Mark was its co-editor along with Dana Alan LaFontaine.

A longtime sufferer of migraines, in mid-1999 McKenna returned to his home in Hawaii after a long lecturing tour. He began to suffer from increasingly painful headaches. This culminated in a brain seizure, which led to McKenna being diagnosed with a highly aggressive form of brain cancer. He died on April 3, 2000, at the age of 53.

Terence McKenna was one of the most compelling of modern mind-adventurers and believed that hallucinogenic substances are the most direct conduit to a complete experience of the mind and its realms. Many of McKenna’s fans came to know him initially through tapes of his lectures or from local broadcasts on KPFK’s Roy of Hollywood program. McKenna’s books The Archaic Revival and Food of the Gods, established him as an articulate and thoughtful thinker who emphasizes the historical importance of hallucinogens in the religious and spiritual development of the human race. He emphasized the need to return to a responsible relationship with the planet—an inward search that will lead to greater self-awareness and self-articulation—a rediscovery of the vegetable Goddess through the use of psychedelics.

In 1992, Mark Keniston, who was at that time co-editor of the Bodhi Tree Book Review with Dana Lafontaine, met with Dr. Huston Smith at his home in the Berkeley hills, a short drive from the campus. Huston Smith is widely regarded as the most eloquent and accessible contemporary authority on the history of religions. Despite the professor's lengthy and distinguished credentials, Keniston found a man who was completely accessible and generous with his time, and more importantly, his ideas. They began their discussion by briefly touching on Christianity and Huston Smith's early years in China as the son of Methodist missionaries and quickly moved on to broader issues of the spirit and commonalities of human religious experience.
